My father was diagnosed a couple of years ago and I have suddenly been plunged into a state of turmoil on one hand. On the other, he's my father and I love him. So I'll do what I can.

This is my attempt to document some of my many experiences dealing with dementia, alzheimer's, nursing homes, medicare, medicaid, home care, adult day services and the complete experience of dealing with this situation. My therapy:-) Hope it helps you too.

Been a long time

Been 2 years since I posted. A lot has occured in that time. My dad died a few months ago. I was prepared for death, so i thought. It occupied my thoughts a lot on and off. His health deteriorated very rapidly. It seemed one day I was with him in the nursing home and the next he couldn't walk. Then everything kind of just went.

So much to say and I just don't know how. I'll have to use this as therapy.

MediWHAT

Someone could have told me just how insane it is to navigate Medicare. Are these programs supposed to help you? It sure as hell doesn't seem that way. If my father or any person incapable of handling their business had to deal with them they would have NO benefits at all. I guess I should think twice about calling them "benefits." Because I truly wonder who it benefits. Part A, Part B, I mean they might as well have Part Z! And let's not forget the GAP or the Doughnut hole, ring..awww hell just dunk it in a glass of milk!

Okay so I did a partial vent. Now that I did spend over an hour on the phone asking a ton of questions I do have a basic understanding of Medicare. But Medicaid can kiss my you know what! I guess if you're not poor as hell there is no hope. sigh

The News

Dementia/Alzheimers is on the news, in the papers and in magazines. The information is everywhere. But you know, it really doesn't matter until you're staring it in the face.

My father is a young man in his mid-sixties. So to get The News that he had early onset dementia was a blow to us all. This happened almost 2 years ago. Now here is a man who was very active so I'm hoping that's why my mother decided not to tell us. Of course we noticed he didn't remember things and we were always telling him to write it down. But I would have never thought of this.
